The ligging era began in earnest with Henry Hemphill's campaign down the southwest coast and through the Keys of Florida in the early 1880s. Working with the material he collected and with the limited material from a few others, including Moore, Raybon and Simpson, Pilsbry published the first serious look at Liguus in Florida in 1912. Among the best documented localities at that time was Key Vaca. Good thing, too, as the island subsequently took a pounding by civilization.

Liguus fasciatus matecumbensis var. flamingoensis
This variety was not uncommon on Key Vaca in the early years of collecting. It was originally found in many populations from Northwest Cape Sable to Key Vaca. It is distinct from the type of the subspecies, L. f. matecumbensis var. matecumbensis, by virtue of its concave columella, more elongate shape and paler color.

Liguus fasciatus solidus var. barbouri; Liguus fasciatus solidus var. marmoratus
Originally all dark and variegated shells from Key Vaca were placed as marmoratus, however some shells are now better placed as floridanus or barbouri. I place the shell at the left barbouri and the shell at the right marmoratus.

Compare with the pseudocastaneozonatus on this page.

Liguus fasciatus solidus var. lineolatus
Sitting around in a cigar box in an outside shed in Miami for over 60 years will cause color loss and other damage as this example from the Bill Crouch collection shows.

Liguus fasciatus solidus var. livingstoni
A rare occurrence, inked and from the 1930s.

Liguus fasciatus solidus var. solidus

Liguus fasciatus solidus var. vacaensis

Liguus fasciatus solidus var. vacaensis
Shells on Key Vaca placed as this variety have continuous coloration from white to orange.
Some short-lived plants to Key Vaca include Liguus fasciatus pictus var. pictus. A few records are likely misidentifications, such as elliottensis and testudineus.
The Liguus records I have for Key Vaca follow.
